Yesterday mousehead and exploded viewer came over to our place to drink mint juleps and watch the Kentucky Derby...I was totally rooting for the winner and am a little disappointed that I didn't actually place a bet on this Barbaro horse. Either way it was a good race. We played some cards and then met up with she-who-doesn't-have-a-blog-but-does- have-a-few-cards-up-her-sleeve and went to Tanoshi Restaurant. The boyfriend had the chirashi (below).
The three that aren't me or the boyfriend shared a huge plate of maki that included this dragon face (attached to a dragon roll).
This was their haul.
I had the maki combination which was a good deal though a little tame compared to the above rolls.
I also had two pieces of ikura and a piece of white tuna sashimi. The white tuna was amazing, so good. Tanoshi specializes or prides themselves on 'Mike's Special'...this is where you tell your waitperson or sushi chef what kind of fish you like, what kind of spice level you like and one other variable and they create a roll tailor made to these preferences. It's kind of like Hama Matsu's sushi molds, which makes sense because, if I understand correctly, the head sushi chef and Tanoshi owner used to work at Hama Matsu. Next time we're going to sit at the bar and Mike Special our minds away.
