Dollar Store Tour c/o National Mechanics

M. Lady's crew was in town as part of their Dollar Store tour. The basic premise of this particular reading series is that all participants write pieces that are inspired by and, in some way, include an actual item bought at a Dollar Store.
M. Lady forgot her print version of a story featuring a candle holder (if I remember her item correctly, which I may not) so she had to read it off someone's iPhone.
J. was there too! There are a few problems with taking photographs of people reading...one is that it makes it harder to actually pay attention to their words, the other is that sometimes, even when the material is compelling, the photographs I manage to take don't reflect the tone or context of the story in their hands.

The pink pussy fly swatter led to a few more poses than J. and M.Lady's stories. Though, when seen in a row, they look similar.

Then there's the whole secret suspenders routine.

The next five photographs are not in order. They should be reversed. Blame Blogspot. I tried to take meaningful photographs of each reader but, frankly, I got a little burned out.

Though there were some early concerns about the venue (it seemed very bar-bar and some of the readers worried that they would be spoken over instead of listened to), the reading went pretty well, I thought. At each location the folks did a raffle in which audience members would write their names on a dollar and then put it in a bag. M. Lady would then draw a dollar and the winner would receive a nice tote bag full of literary goodies. This was how they got gas money. At National Mechanics they accrued $100 in funds, which seemed like a good haul.
