The Finals, Says I-sles

I was surprised to get an invitation to the scrabble finals after my less than ideal games in the semi-finals. But I was happy to attend. The event was held in the lobby of the Free Library by Logan Circle/Square. There were relatively decent sandwiches.
The vegetarian option (the old standby of mozzarella, pesto, and roasted red peppers) was especially decent. The meat sandwiches less so.

In my first game I started with 'awaited' for 80 points and proceeded to pretty much kick my opponent's ass (by 166 points). I was not at all braggy about it at the time, but now I feel like I can be because it was a pretty definitive win...that and I got lucky, of course.
My luck ended there, however, because in the second round I faced a guy who had also trounced his previous opponent....and knew far more words than me (seems he's one of those memorization/anagram types). He beat me by 116 points. So I lost. But he won. If it were a different game that would have meant that I was second, but in Scrabble tournaments it's about your 'spread' ie by how much did you win or lose. So my spread, between the two games, ended up being, what, like 10? That's not good. I don't exactly understand it. It made me, not for the first time, want to participate in Scrabble tournaments: all day affairs with seven games played in a single day!
Panniers is what got me, it was a bingo...and I lost a turn challenging it.

Semi-Finals Says Me

So a while back I played Scrabble at the Free Library in order to qualify for a later tournament. This ended relatively successfully, and last Monday I participated in the semi-finals. I lost my first game to a bloody eyed Ghanaian...he was very nice and good at Scrabble but he did have blood eyes and he was originally from Ghana. I lost by, shoot, 50 or so points. My next game I played against a relatively well put-together older lady who continuously played defensively so that neither of us could really make any good plays. I beat her and she deserved it because her method of playing was rude.

Out Of Order

I hate posting out of order, but I just wanted to share that yesterday, for about ten seconds, I was on the local 11 o'clock news. For playing scrabble.

Scrabble Party

On Saturday the boyfriend and I hosted a little scrabble party. We had a little under twenty guests and a little over ten scrabble participants. I wanted to do a real tourney, complete with Wimbledon like flow charts and a grand champion. But then I realized that I didn't know how to seed people, people like coming two hours late to things even if they should know better (this is only in regards to a scrabble party...lateness in all other parties is accepted and understood), that I have no idea how to make a graphy type thing and that I always get worried that people are getting bored of what I'm enjoying. So there was no tournament, exactly. But there were three rounds of thirty minute games. I was gratified to see that a few people kept playing even after they were no longer required to. Overall success.
