Ben's Rice and Noodles

The boyfriend and I had lunch at Ben's Rice and Noodles at Bryn Mawr and Broadway the other afternoon.
We both had the lunch special. The special included an appetizer and soup of the day (in our case spring roll and miso soup) and then a choice of about eight different dishes. I had the pad ke mao (I think). For $6.50 the helpings were right and the food decent. Excellent? No. But sometimes excellence isn't even what I'm looking for.

Phone Etiquette

The way I answered the phone when I was a kid:

(my parents are home)

Me: Hello?
Person: Hi, is Mister or Missus so and so around?
Me: I'll see if they're available, may I ask who's speaking?
Person: I represent a telemarketer type pitchy guy.
Me: I'm sorry he's not here right now. May I take a message?

The way my mother (once) answered the phone when I was a kid:

Mom: Hello?
Person: Hi, Missus so and so?
Mom: Yes?
Person: I'm calling on behalf of Acme Lawn company with an exciting deal on mowing services.
Mom: We're not interested.
Person: If you give me one moment of you time, Missus so and so, I can tell you about the great deals we're offering.
Mom: We don't have a lawn, just astroturf, thanks though.

The way my father (once or twice) answered the phone when I was a kid:

Dad: Hello.
Person: Hello Mr. Whosawhat?
Dad: Yes.
Person: I'm calling on behalf of Jupiter Moon Savings and Loan with an exciting-
Dad: I'm busy.
Person: If you'll just give me a second to tell you abou this great-
Dad: I don't call you while you're at home. Give me your address and phone number and then maybe we'll talk.
Person: Sir....

Okay that last one I'm still working on. I just remember that however my father phrased it the person got very uptight and did, in fact, call back later in the week with a message on our machine giving phone number and address information (and attitude).

Walkage

The boyfriend and I went on a slightly longer walk a bit after our dim sum meal. He wanted to go to Montrose Beach and see some birds. I wanted to please him. So we both went. It was a nice day and definitely good for a walk along the lake. We walked and saw this:
That also looked like this:
As well as this:
A wing buried in the sand is an eery thing. Is there a whole bird under there or, you know, just a little bit of bird? We took a short cut through this no longer used docking station type place.
We climbed down and up ladders. I was scared but the boyfriend fortified me with confidence and shame.
We hung out here.

And found some of this.
Then put it all over our faces. I'm waiting for the boyfriend to come home so I can see if I can post the really fabulous shot of him with milkweed eyebrows AND mustache. He may say no.
There were not many birds where the birds were supposed to be. But we did see some geese, ducks and coots.

And, in the end, we went to crazy town (Wilson between Broadway and Sheridan) where we went into a McDonalds due to bladder relief needs and came out with cheeseburgers. Crazy town is really crazy. In the twenty minutes we were in the area we saw:

1) a bunch of homeless people talking to themselves
2) a bunch of people yelling at each other
3) gross things
4) a guy who grrred and acted like he was going to take a bite out of my burger
5) a woman in black tights, blue leotard and boom box dancing on the corner (I couldn't decide if she was crazy or a prostitute...I mean maybe she was just having a good time but, erm, I think not).

I mean really crazy. If five people were walking towards us at least three of them would be of the crazy variety. Or, if you have a problem with the word crazy, um some other more politically correct word. And the thing is that I have never been in a really bad neighborhood. This was not a really bad neighborhood, but it was enough for me to want to get the heck out. Crazy town. Really. You know?

Walk Home

The boyfriend and I walked back from dim sum and ran into this hole.
And this lovely fall alley.
And this absolutely amazing dog. I want it. Real bad.

Dim Sum c/o Furama Part 29

Another good dim summing. Below are some favorites: shrimp dumplings, shu mai and shrimp stuffed tofu. I also had a pineapple freeze with tapioca ... and it was very good.

We're Playing This Week

Last night the boyfriend and I made dinner together. I was in charge of seasoning and cooking up the ground venison into lovely hamburger looking food. I didn't do anything fancy, just added a little Worcestire (sp?), salt and pepper. The boyfriend made some very delicious cheese grits and thawed some green beans and cooked them right up. Very filling.

Dramatically Voluptuous, In A Bad Way

Last night I abstained from going to the Innertown pub for a big writing shin dig. Instead she-who-has-no-blog came over and we watched some television, ate some baked brie and drank vodka and orange juice. A Vassar type also came over for the first time and partook in the glory of Grey's Anatomy. It was lovely.
Oh and, for the love of god, if you live in Chicago give money to public radio. They want to make $250,000 by the end of today. I don't think they're going to make it, but you should help them ... I did, I gave them $25 ... that's 15 more dollars than I give to my old high school and 25 more dollars than I give to my college. Think about it people...if I did it, you should feel really guilty if you don't.

Or not.

Calo Restaurant

Wednesday nights have become the boyfriend's and my going out to eat night. Usually we succumb to our desire for sushi but this past Wednesday I thought we should branch out a little. It was hard to branch out. It's so easy just to eat good sushi every week and be satisfied. But I knew that there are so many restaurants that I've passed by that I think I should visit ... so we went to Calo Restaurant. The boyfriend had been to Calo once while I was in Europe. This was my first visit. We ordered the Calamari Diavola, fried calamari in a "spicy buffalo lime cilantro" sauce. It was spicy but I didn't really notice the lime or cilantro in the sauce's flacor. For the most part the sauce tasted just like any buffalo wings sauce. Maybe a little lighter. Somehow it was disappointing.
I realized you can really learn what kind of restaurant a restaurant is by theirr free/accompanying salads. If it's iceberg, well, you're not in as nice a restaurant as you may think. Especially if it's iceberg lettuce, one cucumber slice and two tomatoes.
I ordered the Farfalle with scallops in a lemon basil cream sauce. It was pretty good. Pretty creamy, for sure. I didn't pick up on the basil. The lemon elements of the sauce were sporadic, some bites I could taste it (and like it) but many bites were not as textured. The scallops were tender and plentiful ... really, I was shocked at the number of scallops I was given. The boyfriend had the clams in red sauce over linguini.
I think I would go back to Calo one more time. I would try their ribs or some more standard meat dish. And I wouldn't have their salad or their Buffalo calamari.

PBS

I've been trying to make my insatiable desire for television work to my advantage. By this I mean, predominantly, that maybe I can learn a little with my moving image fetish. To this end I have been watching a fair amount of PBS.

I've learned about the last two wives of King Henry (one was a slut and the other a religious zealot).
The boyfriend's latest Netflix was Ken Burns' documentary on Mark Twain. That guy was very funny ... even if his life was sad, his work was deep and all that ... funny.
We also watched a PBS documentary about yellow fever and its cure. I am feeling very learned. Come on, ask me something about one of these things ... I may know the answer.

Kix!

Cereal is good sometimes. Especially on, perhaps, the last nice day of the year. I sat outside on our back porch and marvelled at the good weather and simple sustenance of Kix.

I'd also like to comment that sometimes, in real life, I don't have that pursed idiot hard care stupid head look on my face ... though when it comes to Halloween and fishing, yeah, that's exactly how I look.

Since

Since I've thrown caution to the wind and shoved my face into the ether of the blogosphere, I thought I would let you all see the bass I caught last winter in Georgia. The boyfriend and I fished and fished and finally I hooked this guy ... then bashed him in the head with an oar ... then ate him.

Halloween Preemptive Party

So a friend or two held a little Halloween party complete with Laffy Taffy jokes and a keg.
The boyfriend dressed up as a hipster (his hat reads: "God, Guns and Guts Made America, Let's Keep It That Way") that has been beat up.
I dressed up as a Russian lady from a long time ago. Suggestions of my name included Anna Karenina or Anastasia. Really I was just wearing a funny hat and a dress from a high school winter formal. Ugh, the word "formal" makes me feel kind of gross on the inside. Others dressed up as their boyfriends, bees, lady bugs, a liberal arts course catalogue and shady hat wearing types.
Thanks to the lady in the car who helped us with that cheeseburger thing. And if any of you don't like your face being up and around (if you even read this which, actually, I don't think you do) tell me and I'll attempt to put a bowling ball over your visage.

Walky Talky

The boyfriend and I took a little walk to the lake on Saturday. It's the first time I've been to this section of lake (because we've moved and all). It was nice. We saw some birds hiding in trees and other things like the sky line and water.

Food Accompanies Movies

Friday night dinner. I made pureed turnips with sage. The salmon I did two ways. One, very classic, way was with a bit of butter, lemon juice and capers (poached). The other was what I did once I realized that we were out of honey and it didn't turn out all that well....it involved brown sugar, soy sauce and vanilla. I know, bad idea. Whatever. I don't even care. Along with the turnips and salmon we had some green peas and some sparkly rosa wine. The classic salmon was good.

Happy Making In All The Right Places

This makes me happy. It will make you happy too. I sometimes talk to the puppies like they're in front of me...the boyfriend discourages me from doing this, but I pay him no mind. The cat below is bigger than the puppy. Is that not amazing? FAT CAT CATTY CAT CAT!

Watching And Reading

On Friday the boyfriend and I stayed in. I made us a dinner of salmon, sage mashed turnips and peas and we watched some movies. The first movie was North By Northwest. I put the movie on my Netflix queue after seeing that shot of Cary Grant running from a plane for the millionth time in my life. I figured it wouldn't be so bad to actually understand the context in which he's running from a plane. I always assumed he was in a desert and that the plane was, somehow, war related. I was wrong. He's supposed to be in Illinois and war is not really what it's about (though the cold war certainly is used).
After a bit of a break we watched A Life Without Pain. This movie is depressing. Interesting and fascinating ... but depressing. Do not watch it at 11:30 at night, it will just make you sad. That being said, it was a movie about three families and the children within the families that have a medical condition that makes it so they don't feel pain (worst sentence ever). Ugh. What interested me the most was the way all the parents totally stood up to this extreme challenge and that they were pretty frank and open. Because the kids don't feel anything they're more likely to get severe injuries...thus all the parents had been, at one time or another, accused of child abuse. Seriously, these kids could break their skulls on the pavement and not notice anything wrong. Crazy, crazy, crazy stuff.
Earlier this week I read this book. It's by a woman who lived in the same area as I did in Maryland. In fact we belonged to the same pool and I had, at one point or another, a crush on her son (but couldn't find him for the boys project which was a disappointment). This book is actually for a young adult audience (my mother brought it to Chicago last time she was here and I finally had nothing else to read) and for that audience it wasn't bad. Girl protagonist learns life lessons from old woman photographer. Boys and horses etc. I liked the photography angle on all of it. Kudos for getting a book deal.

Sandwich Stories

Most mornings I go downtown and learn some things and I start the experience with a beverage from Cosi. Because I go in with some frequency at least one of the Cosi people recognize me and remember what I drink. The other day the dude who remembers me remembered me. It went a little like this (early in the morning):

-Large Earl Grey tea, right?
-Yeah, thanks.
-We didn't have any yesterday.
-I know.
-I told my manager that I have customers who come in for the Earl Grey but it wasn't on the truck.
-Oh well.
-This one's going to be on the house.
- (no words but a 'why would you do that face')
-Because we were out yesterday.
-Well thank you.
-No problem, you're in here all the time.
-Thanks.
-Oh and have this too.
-Gosh, this really is a great start to the day.
-Have a good one.
-You too.

So the other thing this nice man gave me was a sandwich card...you know the kind where you have to buy a million sandwiches (in this case four) before you can get a prize (in this case a free sandwich, pizza or breakfast sandwich). But the thing about this card is that it already had four stamps. Nice man. Below is the sandwich I redeemed the card for, a club sandwich with provolone cheese. And below the sandwich is the unexpected cupcake I bought before my afternoon class...the fashion department was having a bake sale...and my class prospered (well we didn't prosper as much as get our sugar fix...I'm rambling).

Sushi!

A little while ago the boyfriend and I went to Hama Matsu for our sushi fix. The boyfriend had the tako su salad.
I tried a special roll: The Scorpion Roll.... a giant wasabi sauced, tobikko covered, soft shell crab stuffed roll of epic proportions.

And the boyfriend had a white tuna sushi mold.
